Happy World Softball Day!

June 13th marks a significant day in the world of sports as we celebrate World Softball Day. This day commemorates the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) historic announcement on June 13th, 1991, that women's softball would be added to the Summer Olympics program.

The sport made its Olympic debut at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA. This pivotal moment saw teams from Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, and the USA compete for the prestigious title of Olympic Champion. The United States emerged victorious, claiming the gold medal, while China secured silver, and Australia took home the bronze.

Women's softball appeared in the 2000 Sydney Games, the 2004 Athens Games, and the 2008 Beijing Games. After a hiatus, softball made a triumphant return in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021. Team Italy proudly represented Europe at these games, where softball had the distinct honor of opening the sports program with a thrilling game between host Japan and Australia at the Fukushima Azuma Stadium.

The sport's legacy and its significance were further solidified at the recent IOC Session held in Mumbai, India. It was officially announced that baseball and softball will be reinstated into the sports program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. This decision inspires a new generation of athletes to pursue their dreams.

World Softball Day is a celebration of the sport's journey, its milestones, and its bright future.
